GAIN statement on Biden Administration awarding offshore oil leases canceled by court decision

As required by the Inflation Reduction Act, the Interior Department has issued offshore oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico, specifically lease sale 257, to the companies that originally won in November of 2021 before a judge declared the sale invalid. This comes first in a line of reissued lease sales that were canceled over the past year.

Below is a statement that can be attributed to me, Craig Stevens, spokesman for the GAIN Coalition:

“We appreciate that President Biden and his Department of Interior reissued this offshore lease sale. It’s been nearly two years since American energy producers have been allowed to bid for leases in the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for nearly 15 percent of our crude oil output. America has the ability and resources to remain energy secure in this volatile global market. To that end, however, the Interior Department must expedite their five-year offshore leasing plan, and hold leases accordingly.”
