Bipartisan Permitting Reform Win a Step Forward for Promoting Reliable, Affordable Energy

Today, the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024, bipartisan legislation introduced by Senators Joe Manchin (I-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY), has passed a significant milestone, receiving a strong bipartisan vote to pass through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

This legislation, aimed at accelerating the permitting process for critical energy infrastructure in the United States, has been hailed by groups on both sides of the aisle as a crucial step towards improving our nation’s energy infrastructure, bolstering energy security, and reducing global emissions.

Below is a statement that can be attributed to me, Craig Stevens, spokesman for the GAIN Coalition and former senior advisor to U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman:

“It’s encouraging to see the strong bipartisan support for Senators Manchin and Barrasso’s energy permitting legislation. This bill embraces an all-of-the-above approach to energy infrastructure development, accelerating the permitting process for energy projects across the board – renewables like wind and solar that are vital for our nation’s future and the traditional sources of energy that still form the foundation of reliable, affordable energy in this country.

The bill also includes provisions that will help reduce uncertainty for project developers, which is crucial for shoring up the long-term investment in energy infrastructure that is critically needed to meet the growing demand for power.

This legislation should rapidly advance through the Senate and the House to address the immediate need to fix our nation’s broken permitting process. The time to act on it is now.”
