AI Will Drain American Energy Without Easier Permitting

The need to cut through Washington’s red tape and vastly expand energy permitting cannot be overstated (“Make Permitting Easy Again” by the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, op-ed, July 30). We are rapidly approaching a situation in the U.S. where energy production can not keep up with demand because our infrastructure lacks adequate federal support.

Demand for U.S. energy has grown exponentially in recent years. In particular, the sudden emergence of AI development resulted in a massive chunk of America’s electricity being gobbled up by data centers. Despite Big Tech’s own investment in energy infrastructure, their demand continues to outpace the nation’s supply, which could spell disaster down the line.

The Biden-Harris administration has stalled efforts to expand U.S. energy infrastructure by overemphasizing renewable energy while letting traditional sources that form the foundation of our energy supply, like oil and gas, fall to the wayside. Supporting legislation that prioritizes an all-of-the-above approach, including a build-out of both renewable and traditional energy infrastructure, would be a massive win for Trump’s campaign and potential second presidency.
