Wynn: Pipeline infrastructure is a necessity for the Northeast
Al Wynn, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Maryland, recently penned an op-ed in The Center Square on the importance of expanding pipeline infrastructure in the Northeast. New York and other states in the region are now, more than ever, considering investments in pipeline projects to further secure reliable energy. Greater investments in energy infrastructure will aid in meeting heat and power needs across the Northeast, as statistics prove the region is heavily reliant on natural gas and lacks pipeline capacity.
The Trump administration has signaled their commitment to unleashing American energy by engaging regional leaders on the need for more energy infrastructure. New York Governor Kathy Hochul met with the administration in March to discuss energy policy, though no deals were made. As Wynn notes, “Gov. Hochul’s willingness to consider increased pipeline infrastructure is a notable change given her predecessor’s administration’s denial of a previous pipeline permit.” Other leaders, including Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, have indicated that they are open to discussing natural gas pipelines with the Trump administration.
Wynn writes, “Many gas industry specialists have indicated that the best way to reduce costs is to increase pipeline capacities in the Northeast.” A study supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce underscored the importance of pipeline expansion to lower natural gas prices in the region. Moreover, the public is also in support, with a Fiscal Alliance Foundation poll showing that almost half of Massachusetts residents favor new pipeline construction.
As Democrat leaders in the Northeast confront the potential for an energy crisis, the need for natural gas pipelines could be a significant area of compromise. The Northeast’s energy infrastructure must be enhanced to ensure reliability and resilience through domestic resource utilization.
